We have employed bis-β-diketonato ligands to obtain a wide range of unusual metallo-supramolecular architectures that include discrete platforms, helicates, triangles and tetrahedrons as well as new metal-framework materials based on such ligand systems. The effect of pressure on the lattice structure of one such extended Cu(II) system revealed a remarkable phase change involving the reversible bond breaking/making of axial Jahn-Teller bonds. Other oligonuclear supramolecular entities based on related bis(triketone) ligands as well as polypyridyl ligand systems have also been synthesised. The results exemplify the extraordinary supramolecular diversity and novelty that is possible using these extended ligand types. Discrete linear, triangular and interwoven products have been isolated including the unique octa-nuclear Fe(III) structure incorporating the unprecedented universal '3-ravel' motif shown below.
