Phase transition from a disordered periodic structure to an ordered lamellar structure with decreasing temperature is observed in the mixture of D2O, 3-methylpyridine (3MP) and sodium tetraphenylborate (NaBPh4) by means of small-angle neutron scattering. By optical microscope and small-angle light scattering, spherical droplet of the scale of 10 micrometer and a concentric symmetry of the dielectric constant distribution in the ordered phase are confirmed. These results are interpreted that a pair of hydrophilic and hydorophobic ions stabilize the interface of water and 3MP and these interfaces stack regularly to form the onion morphology.
