The self-assembly behavior of colloidal nanoparticles on planar and patterned substrates, and in nanotemplates are discussed. The assembly of particles on planar substrate is essential to apply nanoparticles to solid-state devices. Furthermore, the integration of particles in nanopatterns/nanotemplates provides new strategy to form the controllable, uniform, and unique nanostructures for the practical device applications. The assembly of particles in these nanotemplates constructs the high-density, self-organized nanostructures with nanoparticles, which are crucially important for the device applications. Also the controllable manipulation of nanostructures with single and multiple layers of particles, selectively assembled particles, and with various kinds of particles realizes the new scheme and structures of devices with noble and improved functionality. In this study, it is reviewed the self-assembly behavior of particles on planar substrate determined by particle concentration, surfactant, substrate, solvent, and so on. Additionally, the assembly of colloidal Fe2O3, FePt, CdSe nanoparticles in self-organized anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanotemplates and patterned SiO2/Si substrate with self-assembled diblock copolymer is introduced. The magnetic properties and electrical properties of particles in self-organized nanopattern/nanotemplates are discussed for the application to patterned magnetic device and flash-type memory device.
