Among various forms of laser desorption/ionization (LDI), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) is current the most common, where organic acids are used as a matrix which assists ionization of analytes by laser irradiation. On the analysis of big molecules such as proteins, polysaccharides, or nucleic acids, MALDI is the method of choice among LDIs. Recently, a great deal of interest has been focused on the analysis of small molecules such as lipids, oligosaccharides, oligonucleotide, amino acids, and small peptides. The major disadvantage of using MALDI in the analysis of small molecules is that MALDI provides interference peaks in the small m/z ranges. To overcome this disadvantage, a lot of efforts have been concentrated on developing new materials to replace the organic acids used as matrix in MALDI. In this presentation, the current trends in LDI will be overviewed and new developments in the analysis of small molecules using LDI will be introduced.
