Ink-jet printing was used to produce thin film transistors (TFT) directly on commercial plastic films (3M inkjet film) with single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) inks. The ink for printing three electrodes gate, drain, and source was prepared using an aqueous dispersion of crude SWNT bundles. The active layer of the TFT was printed from an aqueous dispersion of SWNTs that had been selectively functionalized to lessen the conductivity of the metallic SWNTs. For the dielectric layer, poly(methyl methacrylate) was coated on printed gate electrodes on plastic film. The printed all-SWNT-TFT on plastic films exhibited a mobility of 296 cm2/Vs with a transconductance of 49.3 µS without electrical breakdown.
