Fabrication of a novel cytochrome c immobilized biosensor for electrochemical detection of nitrite ions

A novel cytochrome c immobilized biosensor was fabricated by modifying the surface of indium tin oxide coated glass (ITO) electrode using Silica- chitosan - multi wall carbon nanotube- Au nanoparticles composite as the matrix for enzyme immobilization. The biosensor is designated as MWNT-Si-CS/Au/cyt c. Firstly, silica- chitosan composite was embedded into MWNT by performing insitu sol-gel reactions in the presence of functionalized MWNT. Further, Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) were electrodeposited onto MWNT-Si-CS coated ITO electrode. The MWNT-Si-CS/Au/cyt c biosensor was tested for the electrochemical oxidation of nitrite ions by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry. For the comparative purpose, MWNT-Si/Au/cyt c, Si-CS/Au/cyt c, MWNT-CS/Au/cyt c, MWNT/cyt c were also fabricated. The ITO/MWNT-Si-CS/Au/cyt c biosensor exhibited enhanced selectivity and sensitivity towards the electrochemical oxidation of nitrite ions.
