Tungsten-doped tin oxide (WxSn1-xO2, x=0.05) was prepared by co-precipitation of SnCl4.5H2O & WCl4 with post annealing & characterized by XRD, SEM & TEM. The optimum doping level of tungsten was found to be 5% & with increasing doping level, segregation of tungsten on the surface of SnO2 appears which was confirmed by XRD. WxSn1-xO2/TiO2, a heterojunction structure between tungsten doped tin oxide and TiO2, was prepared by covering the surface of the 50 nm-sized WxSn1-xO2 particles with TiO2 by sol-gel method. It was found that WxSn1-xO2 shows a profound absorption over the visible range in comparison to pure SnO2 and its valence band (VB) is located lower than that of TiO2. As a result, under visible light irradiation (λ≥420 nm), WxSn1-xO2 showed a notably high photocatalytic activity in removal of gaseous 2-propanol and evolution of CO2. The high photocatalytic efficiency of the WxSn1-xO2/TiO2 under visible light irradiation was therefore deduced to be caused by the hole transfer between the VB of SbxSn1-xO2 and TiO2.
