Superhydrophobic surface coatings with high static water contact angles (>150°) have received tremendous attention in recent years. The applications of superhydrophobic coatings are diverse due to their unique water-repellency, self-cleaning ability, and anti-biofouling property. A variety of strategies to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces have been reported including surface roughening, chemically lowering the surface free energy, lithographic patterning, laser/plasma etching, and vertical alignment of nanostructured materials. These coating materials, however, typically require harsh synthetic conditions and/or complicated fabrication techniques, and possess poor substrate compatibility. Herein we demonstrate a simple and facile synthesis of superhydrophobic surface coatings composed of silica particles immobilized in a perfluorinated xerogel film. The surface coatings prepared in this work are characterized in term of water contact angles, surface roughness, and physical stability. Furthermore, to evaluate anti-biofouling propensity, the coatings are exposed to bacterial solutions (i.e., 108 cfu/mL of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus) under flowing conditions.
