Graphene is a well-defined two-dimensional structure of carbon atoms. It has received a great deal of attention because of its unique electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties. Potential applications of graphene for nanoelectronics, sensors, and nanocomposites have been actively pursued. The biological applications of graphene and graphene oxide remain relatively unexplored with wide possibilities, however. There are many biological applications possible for a new synthesized material. Here, we report the synthesis of nanographenes from commercially available graphite powder in PEG-conjugated forms for biological applications. DNA is loaded onto the nanographene oxide sheets at a high yield via simple molecular (electrostatic and other specific interaction). Interestingly, the nanographene oxide sheets showed photoluminescence from visible to NIR range, which can be used in cellular imaging with less cytotoxicity compared to carbon nanotube. Cell assay has been performed to find out the fate of DNA in the cells.
