Sensitive analysis technique of the arsenic compounds based on single drop microextraction (SDME) in-line coupled with capillary electrophoresis (CE) was developed. With this technique, preconcentration and separation was performed in a single run. The analytes were toxic compounds including inorganic As(III), As(V), and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA). Three–phase SDME have used the partitioning of the analytes between the aqueous phase and the organic membrane. However, negative charge of the arsenic compounds prohibited the partitioning to the organic membrane. In order to alleviate this problem, positively charged Aliquat 336 were added the organic membrane as a carrier. The carrier and arsenic compounds formed ion-pair complexes, thus partitioning the arsenic compounds into the organic membrane. The arsenic compounds in the organic membrane are back-extracted to the basic acceptor phase simultaneously with the counter-transport of the hydroxide ions. After extraction, the acceptor phase is injected and arsenic compounds are separated by CE. The effects of extraction parameters including the concentration of the carrier, the pH of the acceptor phase, and the ionic strength of the donor phase, and extraction time were investigated. The enrichment factors were from 13 to 140 with 5-min SDME. In addition, this technique was successfully applied to the environmental samples.
