Dendrimers with zinc porphyrin core could form the coordination complexes with pyridine via axial ligation. On complexing zinc porphyrin with an axial ligand, two effects are often seen in the UV-vis spectrum: a red shift of the entire spectrum relative to that of zinc porphyrin and an increase in the εα/εβ ratio of the two visible bands. Thus, one could use the wavelength shift and intensity ratio of the visible bands as a measure of the degree of complexation. Construction of higher-dimensional dendrimer may be possible by the formation of coordination complex between dendrimers of different type, such as coordination of pyridine-cored dendron on zinc porphyrin-cored dendrimers. In the presence of pyridine-cored dendron, the complexation of zinc porphyrin-cored dendrimer results in the red shift of Soret band and Q band maxima, and the increase of the intensity ratio εα/εβ with red-shift of fluorescence maxima. This study deals with the preparation of various zinc porphyrin-cored dendrimers and how the dendritic environments of zinc porphyrin-cored dendrimers affect the axial coordination of pyridine as a model of high dimensional porphyrin dendrimer.
