Lithium ion batteries have been widely used in everyday life especially for mobile electronics, from cellular phones to lap top computers. For the last decade, there has been a very remarkable development in lithium ion battery technologies for the mobile applications. This rapid growth of battery technologies was possible owing to good combinational efforts between industries and government. Research and development on batteries for green cars are now under active progress in many countries. It is generally viewed, however, that the current technology for batteries of green car is still in an infant stage. We may have to go quite a long way to completely address all the problems on realization of the economic green cars. The renewable energy systems require also batteries with higher capacities, high performance, and low cost than current lithium ion batteries. For these, medium and large-sized lithium ion battery projects have been launched in the middle of the last decade. In this presentation, the past, present, and future of the lithium battery developments in Korea will be discussed. The roadmap for advanced battery technology development until 2015 in Korea is also introduced.
