Development of molecular receptors possessing high affinity and selectivity for various targeted guest molecules, have been an ongoing challenge in the field of supramolecular chemistry. As results, many model systems utilizing various molecular scaffolds have been developed and studied. Among them, calix[4]pyrroles have been shown to bind anions in organic or aqueous organic media and the isolation of the binding domain from matrix enhances the anion binding affinity of calix[4]pyrroles. Based on these our previous results, we have designed and synthesized various calix[4]pyrrole-based ion/molecular receptors. The calix[4]pyrrole bearing diametrical strap on one side of the molecule showed many interesting binding characteristics depending on the strapping elements. For example, the oligoethers strapped system exhibited anion-modulated, cation selective binding. When pyrrole units were replaced with other aromatic systems, the molecules displayed neutral molecule recognition such as fullerene and TNT. The systematic binding studies indicated that the modified systems are better receptors for anions, ion-pairs and neutral molecules. When the hybrid systems contain chromogenic or fluorogenic reporter groups, the system became excellent chromogenic or fluorogenic chemosensors. The dicyanovinyl-substituted calix[4]pyrroles can be selective ratiometric chemosensors for cyanide anion. The versatility of the calixpyrrole-based chemosensor systems will be presented.
