To develop metal-free ionic dyes with near-infrared light-absorbing abilities, two ionic dyes (DPVPI-H as a hydrophobic dye and DPVPI-M as a hydrophilic dye) featuring a 1,1-diphenylvinyl auxiliary electron donor and N-alkyl indolium carboxylic acid acceptors have been prepared and applied to sensitized hydrogen generation based on Pt/TiO2/Dye photocatalyst. With a very simple π-conjugated bridge (a C=C double bond), both dyes achieved broad photo-response ranging from 400 to 800 nm. Both dyes showed higher H2- generation efficiencies than reference dye, DMOM. Among them, the hydrophilic photocatalyst, DPVPI-M, showed substantially higher H2- generation efficiencies than the hydrophobic photocatalyst, DPVPI-H. In the cases of hydrophilic dye, ethylene-oxide chains make the dye surface miscible with the aqueous phase so that charge recombination was impeded and dye regeneration was facilitated by approaching of sacrificial reagent close to the radical cation center. These results strongly suggest that the optimization of hydrophilic character is a key issue associated with the general guideline for designing organic dyes with high sensitization capability in H2- generation based on TiO2 and related semiconductors.
