Second-order rate constants have been determined spectrophotometrically for the reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl X-substituted benzenesulfonates with a series of pyridines in 20 mol % DMSO/80 mol % H2O at 25.0 oC. The Brønsted-type plot exhibits a downward curvature as the basicity of pyridines increases, suggesting a change in the rate-determining step (RDS) for a stepwise mechanism. The Hammett plot for the reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl X-substituted benzenesulfonates with 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine is nonlinear but the corresponding Yukawa-Tsuno plot is linear with an r value of 0.6, indicating that the electronic nature of the substituent X in the sulfonyl moiety does not change the RDS. Pyridines are less reactive than alicyclic secondary amines but more reactive than primary amines of similar basicity. Detailed reaction mechanism will be discussed.
