Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) with collision-induced dissociation (CID) was used to develop a qualitative and quantitative analytical method for chiral analysis of drugs, thyroxine and carnitine. This approach uses the kinetic method based on the measurement of a competitive dissociation-based branching ratio (Rchiral) and chiral recognition ratio (CR) method to perform the data analysis. The linear relationship between the logarithm of the fragment ion abundance ratio and the optical purity was constructed to determine the chiral purity of enantiomeric mixtures of drugs. The developed methods were very sensitive, simple, rapid and accurate (1-3%) for chiral analysis of thyroxine by kinetic method and carnitine by chiral recognition ratio method. This technique shows promise for the analysis of chiral drugs, broadening the application area for tandem mass spectrometry.
