An experimental setup for direct elemental analysis of recycled plastics by laser-Induced Breakdown Spectrometry (LIBS) was constructed. The combination of a high resolution spectrograph with a broad spectral coverage and time-resolved technique resulted in considerable improvements in selectivity and sensitivity for complex matrix plastic samples. With a normalization to carbon as an internal standard, the limits of detection were in the ppm range. The differentiation of various recycled plastics including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polycarbonate (PC), and polyacrylamide (PA) has been successfully performed based on T-test within confidence level of >95%. The library spectra were obtained by inducing the laser spark on ten random surface spots and averaging the resulting emission spectra.
