Fabrication of Large-Area and Highly Reproducible SERS Active Surface by the Replication Method from Nanostructured Templates

SERS-active silver nanoemboss films were easily fabricated by the replication method from nanostructured Al templates. Surface of thermoplastic polymers (polystyrene, PS, or polyethylene, PE) was nanostructured first by heat-and-pressure-induced replication method with textured Al templates, and silver was coated over the nanoemboss polymer surface with a controlled thickness up to 250 nm. A 200 nm thickness of silver coating showed the strongest SERS intensity when it was treated with benzenethiol and tested with 632.8 nm laser. Many PS or PE replicas (420 nm emboss diameter and 200 nm silver thickness) could be successfully fabricated from one replication master. Almost same intensity of SERS was reproducibly observed in ten different spots of each replica and twenty different replicas form one replication master. Well-known SERS active films (AgORC) were prepared and compared with our samples to confirm the uniformity and reproducibility of SERS intensity over the large.
