Alachlor which is one of the selective herbicides has been classified as an extremely toxic multisite carcinogen with moderate residue effect in soils. A combination of electrospray ionization and tandem mass spectrometry was used to characterize the interaction of alachlor and dipeptides in the presence of transition metal ions in vitro. The formation and dissociation mechanism of complexes containing alachlor and dipeptide in the presence of metal ions is quite different from those of alachlor and dipeptide itself. The oxidation state of the metal ion, nature of the ligand, and site of attachment to the metal ions are found to control the dissociation of these complex ions. Use of metal complexation also resulted in improved signal intensity and different fragmentation mechanism induced by metal ion catalytic effect.
