Dendritic (dfppy-Czn)2Ir(dpq) complexes were synthesized, where dpq and dfppy-Czn are 2,3-bis-(2-pyridyl)-qinoxaline and 5-Czn-2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridine, respectively, in which the dfppy ligands are connected with the carbazole-functionalized dendrons (Cz1 = 4-(9-carbazolyl)benzyloxymethyl and Cz2 = 4-[1,3-bis(9-carbazolyl)benzyloxy]benzyloxymethyl). Selective excitation of the carbazole units in (dfppy-Czn)2Ir(dpq) resulted in fluorescence quenching of excited Cz due to energy/electron transfer to the Ir-complex core. The fluorescence quenching rate constants of Cz were determined to 1010 s-1 on the basis of the decay time constants. The reduced quenching rate constant of Cz in high-generation dendrimers is probably attributable to the long distance between Cz dendrons and the Ir-complex core. Moreoever, phosphorescence from the Ir complexes was very weaker and the lifetime was shorter than that of (dfppy)2Ir(dpq) without carbazole units. We probed the Cz cation radical species generated by PET by examining the transient absorption.
