In this work, a free-radical grafting method was applied for the modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to improve their dispersion in a polymer matrix using a compounding technique. Through free-radical grafting for in situ polymerization, MWNTs agglomerates turn into a networked micro-structure, which in turn builds up a strong interfacial interaction with the polymeric matrix during the mixing procedure. PS-MWNTs with a hairy rod nanostructure were synthesized by the in situ free-radical polymerization of styrene monomer on the surface of MWNTs. PS-MWNTs filled polypropylene (PS-MWNTs/PP) nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing. The physicochemical effect of polystyrene grafted multi-walled carbon nanotube (PS-MWNTs) content on the PP based nanocomposites was investigated. Surface characteristics of PS-MWNTs were investigated by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy (FT-Raman), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As a result, FT-IR and Raman spectra showed characteristic peaks and intensity changes of PS grafted MWNTs. And microscopic analysis (TEM) showed grafted PS. Composite behavior was found to differ both between fillers and studied properties such as complex viscosity, storage modulus and loss modulus. Moreover, the dispersion state of PS-MWNTs in PS-MWNTs/PP nanocomposites was determined with using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). And electrical resistance was also measured to investigate PS-MWNTs dispersion in PS-MWNTs/PP nanocomposites. The results of rheological, microscopic (SEM) and electrical resistance measurements were increased with increasing PS-MWNT content.
