Indolocarbazole dimers with amide and urea functional groups at ends have been prepared. These dimers fold to helical structures by intramolecular hydrogen bonding between indolocarbazole NH protons and the amide or urea carbonyl oxygens, as proven by 1H NMR and 2D NOE experiments. Upon folded, the dimers offer an internal cavity with multiple hydrogen bond donors, thus capable of binding complementary anions. Indeed, the dimers bind anions strongly and selectively, in particular tetrahedral oxoanions such as sulfate and hydrogen phosphate. The urea dimer has two additional NH protons and therefore bind sulfate ion by an order of the magnitude compared with the amide dimers. However, the difference in the association constant between two dimers is negligible in smaller anions such halides and azide, indicative of the extra NH ptotons not participating in the binding events.
