Palladium catalysts in Sonogashira reactions (carbon-carbon bond formation reaction) have attracted a lot of attentions due to their high selectivity and yield in chemical synthesis. Zeolites have been frequently used as supporting materials for Pd catalysts since they have high porosity and surface area, and can be easily recovered after chemical reactions. Recently, we have showed that CeO2 particles on TiO2 could induce high dispersions of metal nanoparticles and suppress the sintering of metal at the elevated temperature, resulting in high catalytic efficiency in CO oxidation reactions [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 132, 356 (2010)]. In these studies, we have explored CeO2-TiO2 mixtures as supporting materials for Pd nanoparticles, in which 10% Ce atoms were deposited on the TiO2 surface via sol-gel method. The electronic and morphological structures of CeO2-TiO2 were investigated using EDS and XPS. The extent of dispersion of palladium as a function of the calcinating temperature were examined using TEM, STEM, and EDS. In the microwave reaction, reaction efficiency of Pd/CeO2-TiO2 comparing with Pd/Zeolite have been investigated.
