1,3,5,-Trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) is a high-energy cyclic trinitramine compound and a common ingredient in military and industrial explosive. The quality, crystal phase, size distribution and shape play crucial roles in mechanical properties and in all steps of processing. Recrystallization is one of methods for improving the size distribution and shape of the RDX particles, which are important parameters affecting their burning rate and sensitivity. Recently, recrystallization using supercritical fluid becomes an attractive alternative to conventional crystallization. Field-flow fractionation (FFF) is one of veratile separation techniques in the field of analytical separation sciences. Asymmetrical flow FFF (AsFlFFF), one of members of FFF family, provides separation of components based on their hydrodynamic sizes. AsFlFFF is regarded as a powerful tool for separation and characterization of particles and polymers. To date, there has not been a report on the characterization of RDX using AsFlFFF. In this work, AsFlFFF was employed for the determination of the size distributions of RDX particles obtained by recrystallization using supercritical carbon dioxide or an anti-solvent. It was found that the size and shape of the RDX particles vary with operating conditions. The mean diameter of RDX particles decreased as the pressure increased. Results from AsFlFFF were compared with those obtained by optical microscopy (OM). It seems that the differences abetween the results from AsFlFFF and OM are attributed to aggregation and the difference in shape of RDX particles, as indicated by SEM measurements.
