We report on the synthesis of mesoporous yttria?zirconia and ceria?zirconia thin films with highly ordered and three-dimensionally organized pore structures. The amount of yttrium or cerium present in the material was controlled in the range of 0.01?0.1 molar ratio to zirconium. In general, the calcination to remove the structure-directing surfactants is conducted at 300 °C, inducing amorphous walls of the film, which limits scope for applications. The thermal treatment was performed to crystallize the walls consisting of yttria?zirconia and ceria?zirconia. According to the X-ray diffraction results, the crystallization happens from 500 °C and the pore structures still remain. Although the peaks associated with the presence of pores arranged parallel to the substrate were disappeared at 600 °C, the perpendicular pore structure was still survived, as confirmed by electron microscopy. Therefore, our mesoporous yttria?zirconia and ceria?zirconia thin films with highly ordered pore structures and crystallized frameworks are expected to be applied to various fields such as solid oxide fuel cells and automotive exhaust three-way catalysts.
