We prepared layered metal hydroxides (LMHs), which consisted of mixed metal hydroxide layers and interlayer anions, via coprecipitation method by titrating mixed metal solutions (Ca/Al = or Ca/Fe = 2/1) with sodium hydroxide solution until pH of ~11.5 and ~13.0 for CaAl- and CaFe-LMHs, respectively. From X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, both LMHs are determined to have hydrocalumite (JCPDS No.19-0902)-like structures with space group of C2/c and cell parameters of a = 5.76 Å, c = 17.22 Å and a = 5.87 Å, c = 17.23 Å for CaAl- and CaFe-LMHs. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were applied to analyze the local symmetry and structure around metal ions; X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra exhibited that the calcium in both LMHs has 7 coodination with oxygen, which well corresponds to the hepta-coordination of calcium in hydrocalumite structure. For the intercalation of bio-functional molecules like ascorbic acid, folic acid and taurine into the interlayer space of LMHs, two different intercalative routes, exfoliation-reassembly (ER) and solid-phase (SP) intercalation were utilized. The ER intercalates were obtained by delaminating LMHs into nanosheets in formamide solution and restacking them under the existence of bio-functional molecules, while SP intercalates were obtained by grinding LMHs powders with bio-functional molecule salts in mortar. From the fourrier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, both intercalates, ER and SP ones are determined to have electrostatic interaction between bio-functional molecules and positively charged layers. Meanwhile, it was proven from XRD patterns that the ER intercalates have amorphous structures and the SP ones have crystalline layer-by-layer stacking.
