We have been interested in developing the methods for organizing zeolite microcrystals in the form of uniformly aligned, two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) arrays through well-defined covalent and ionic linkages. We have also recently discovered an unprecedented method for the orientation-controlled synthesis of uniformly aligned 2D and possibly 3D arrays of silicalite-1 crystals, where the orientations of the crystals are controlled by varying the nature of polyurethane polymers. Since 3D orientation of each 1 x 1 x 1 µm3 crystal means by 3D orientation of 1 million nanochannels or 1 billion nanopores with atomic precision, the resulting two-dimensional (2D) and 3D arrays of a large number of zeolite crystals with uniform orientations are expected to be useful as advanced materials.
