onic liquids are organic salts with low melting points, and have received much attention in many areas of chemistry and materials sciences due to their characteristic physicochemical properties. A broad range of catalytic reactions (lanthanide triflates-catalyzed three-component Mannich-type reaction, Friedel-Crafts alkylation, Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation etc.,) showed that the use of ionic liquids can confer many advantages upon catalytic reactions over reactions in organic solvents in terms of activity, stability and the reusability of the solvent-catalyst systems. Their tunable properties (hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and solvent miscibility) were transferred to the gold and silicon oxide surfaces via formation of the self-assembled monolayer with the novel task-specific ionic liquids to generate anion-directed switchable surfaces. Anion-directed phase-transfer of the ionic liquid-CNT hybrid materials was also achieved.
