Elementary time scale of the chemical dynamics in molecules lies is in the range of 10 ~ 100 fs. Femtosecond spectroscopy is therefore an ideal tool to for the study of a variety of molecular dynamics in chemical systems. Femtosecond light pulses may initiate chemical reactions, set off vibrational wave packet motions, and promote a molecular system to a nonequilibrium state, which relaxes in time. Femtosecond pulses following the pump pulses interrogate the molecular state in a time resolved manner. Over the years, we have developed several four wave mixing techniques, such as spectrally resolved four wave mixing (SRFWM) and tau-resolved transient grating (TRTG), valuable for the study of chemical reaction dynamics and molecular dynamics in condensed phases. Critical advances in the time resolved fluorescence has also been made, which greatly improve the femtosecond spectroscopy as a tool for the study chemical and biological systems. Some details of the developments will be presented with the applications of those techniques to the study of chemical dynamics.
