Immobilization of Moorella thermoacetica on Glassy Carbon Electrode and Application to CO2 Activation

Anaerobic bacterium, Moorella thermoacetica could be successfully immobilized on the glassy carbon electrode and its electrocatalytic reactivity on carbon dioxide activation was examined. The glassy carbon plate was treated with O2 plasma and then immersed in poly-L-lysine containing soultion. After wahing, Moorella thermoacetica solution containing glutaraldeyde was dropped on the surface followed by wahing and drying. The surface was investigated by scanning electron microscope to show that ~ 80 % of the surface was covered by the bacterium. The modified electrode could convert carbon dioxide to formate and the formate production rate per one bactria cell was confirmed to be higher than that determined in solution.
