Among the various types of fuel cells, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) is being in the vanguard, and have recently drawn lots of attention in both fundamental and application. carbon-supported platinum or platinum alloys are commonly used as electrocatalysts to enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, it's difficult to commercialize PEMFCs due to the cost of platinum. So, many research groups have suggested alternatives. Especially, N-doped carbon-based catalysts have attracted attention because of its much better electrocatalytic activity, tolerance to crossover effect, long-term operation stability than platinum for ORR in alkaline fuel cells. However, In acidic media, N-doped carbon shows a lower ORR activity than Pt catalysts. For enhancing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, we synthesized Phosphorus-nitrogen dual doped carbon. The P,N-doped carbon is prepared via pyrolysis of mixture composed of 1,10-phenanthroline, 9,10-Dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene 10-oxide, iron chloride at 900oC under an N2 atmosphere. The physical properties of the prepered doped OMC were examined via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Emmett-Teller(BET) surface area analayses, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
