Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals or fuels by using solar energy is an attractive but still a challenging process to address both energy and environmental issues. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction has been mostly conducted by TiO2-based photocatalysts in aqueous solution. However, the solubility of CO2 in water is very low and it causes low conversion efficiency and a problem for practical application. Here, we have investigated the ionic liquid-mediated system for the photocatalytic and (photo-)electrochemical CO2 reduction since CO2 solubility in ionic liquids is relatively high. We have developed the synthetic system of high purity (>99.9%) ionic liquid and several physicochemical/photochemical properties of ionic liquids, which should be considered for the photocatalytic CO2 reduction, have been also investigated. The synthesized ionic liquids have been used as a reaction medium and it was observed that the photocatalytic CO2 reduction could effectively occur in ionic liquid system.
