Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are complex chemical substances that persist in the environment and cause adverse effects to human health in persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Therefore, many studies have been carried out for better understanding of CPs over the years. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCx GC) based on quadrupole mass spectrometry (qMS) coupled to a thermal modulator is a powerful technique to separate, characterize, and classify the chemical composition for the analysis of highly complex mixtures such as CPs. Also, GCx GC with a flame ionization detector (FID) applied to study for partially quantification of CPs. Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs, C10-C13) with a chlorine content of 51.5, 55.5 and 63% and chloroparaffin C10 Mix were used in this study. The obtained GCxGC qMS spectra showed that classification of SCCPs were possible by interpreting fragmented ions. This interpretation could be successfully applied to study SCCP mixture. Furthermore, SCCPs with chlorine contents were quantitatively analyzed by using GCxGC FID. Therefore, the GCxGC qMS is shown to be a powerful technique to study CPs.
