The separation of chiral compounds is one of the most interesting and challenging tasks because of their identical physical and chemical properties. Magnetic materials possessing chiral functionality on their surface can not only exhibit magnetic properties but also recognize chirality. The present work explores the synthesis of carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin capped zirconia magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@ZrO2@CMCD) and their application in selective enantioseparation of amino acids. The Fe3O4@ZrO2@CMCD magnetic nanoparticles (CMCDZMNPs) are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TGA), elemental analysis (EA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and vibrating Sample magnetometer (VSM). As-synthesized CMCDZMNPs are applied for separation of amino acids and it was proposed that the functional groups at chiral center of the amino acid molecules might interacts with hydroxyl group of CMCD and makes hydrogen bond formation resulted in selective adsorption of enantiomer. Most importantly, the synthesized CMCDZMNPs have shown an excellent magnetic property that reflects in their easy separation from solution.
