Molecules located on the cell surface, such as the bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), are particularly important in the nodulation process due to their proximity to the symbiotic partner's cell surface and are likely to function in host symbiont recognition or as signal molecules. LPS has a role in the development of nitrogen fixing nodules. A bacterium producing the LPS was isolated and identified as Pseudomonas spp. The effects of various carbon sources, nitrogen sources, and minerals on the LPS production were studied. The maximum LPS production were obtained when fructose and NH4Cl were used as carbon source and nitrogen source, respectively.
