Highly ordered carbon nanofibers(OCNFs) and disordered carbon nanofibers(DCNFs) were synthesized through nanocasting of differently-pretreated mesoporous SBA-15 silica using in-situ formed polymer as carbon source. These carbon nanofibers were used as support materials for Pt50-Ru50 catalyst to investigate their supporting effect on the anodic catalytic performance in a direct methanol fuel cell. Both CNFs-supported catalysts showed high electrocatalytic activity and excellent catalyst stability for methanol oxidation. In particular, the PtRu-DCNFs exhibited higher catalytic activity and better catalyst stability than the PtRu-OCNFs in the DMFC due to their easily accessible surface structure, which allows for better catalyst utilization and more efficient diffusion of fuel and products. The PtRu-DCNFs significantly increased electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation compared to a commonly used commercial E-TEK catalyst by ca. ~ 77 %.
