This talk introduces a thin polymer membrane as a mechanical sensing element that offers a device structure that can measure molecular interaction forces. A thin membrane transducer is designed and fabricated for monitoring bio/chemical reactions through chemo-mechanical transduction with high sensitivity. A specific molecular binding event on the surface of the membrane causes the deflection due to a surface force. The deflection can be detected by the capacitance change across a gap between the membrane and a substrate. The device structure offers an inherently robust configuration in a liquid with selective sensitivity to the surface reaction. A capacitive detection enables compact devices in a microarray format. This work demonstrates the detection of various bio/chemical reactions: the formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), liquid spreading, a protein interaction, and a DNA hybridization.
