In the previous research, we found that fluorescent sensor based on a tripeptide (SerGluGlu) with a dansyl fluorophore detected selectively Al(III) in aqueous buffered solutions without any organic cosolvent. However, this sensor showed a turn on response to Al(III) in narrow pH range (4.0 < pH < 7.0). Thus, we developed novel fluorescent sensor to work at lower pH because the real pH of the underground water sample is below 3.0 and the lower pH is, the more soluble Al(III) ions are in aqueous solution. In the present study, we synthesized pyrene and other fluorophore labelled peptides using a solid phase synthesis. These sensors exhibited a response to Al(III) in acidic condition at pH lower than 4.0. Furthermore, it was working well in the polluted underground water sample. The binding mode of these sensors with Al(III) was investigated using ESI mass spectrometry, NMR titration, and pH titration experiments.
