A novel electroless Pt deposition method was exploited by employing oxygen-defect mediated redox process. Spntaneous Pt deposition can be achieved by the electrons located on the oxygen defect site of In2O3 surface, which was investigated by using hollow silica nanoshell providing an undisturbed and consistent environment for reactions. The density of oxygen defect can be modulated with varying the annealing temperature, affecting reactivity of the defective metal oxide surface. We took advantage of this newly discovered process to provide a simple protocol to produce semiconductor/noble-metal hybrid nanocomposites with intimately contacting heterojunction interfaces such as TiO2/Pt and Fe3O4/Pt which exhibited the improved activity and stability in the photocatalytic performance.
