In this study, Fe0 and bimetal Fe0 were synthesized, characterized and used successfully to degrade 4-Chlorophenol (4-CP) and Pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the presence of trace amount of citric acid (CA). The best 4-CP degradation was achieved on Fe0 in the presence of 2mM of citric acid accompanying with fast removal of the total organic carbon (TOC). And, we interestingly found that superoxide radical and hydroxyl radicals could be more easily generated in the presence of citric acid. The degradation of PCP with Fe0 was also enhanced in the presence of catechol. The 4-CP and PCP degradation pathways were probed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and founded that 4-CP and PCP degradation pathways were dependent on reactive oxygen species and ligand-Fe complexes generated in Fe0-ligand system. This study can clarify the role of CA on the ROS production with nanoscale zero-valent iron, and also provide a green method to removal organic pollutant.
