A 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA)-immobilized pencil lead/gold nanoparticle electrode was prepared to measure bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor, in aqueous samples of different concentrations. Initially, Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) were formed on the surface of pencil lead and then 4-MBA was subsequently conjugated on the Au surface. The employment of 4-MBA was to utilize its thiol group for easy conjugation on the Au surface and its carboxylic group to attract phenol group of BPA for the selective and sensitive measurement. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to determine BPA concentrations of the samples. The electrochemical responses were linear over the concentration range from 0.5 to 50 uM with R2 of 0.978. In overall, the proposed sensor was simple to prepare and cost-effective for routine at-site measurement.
