Perylene pigments which are known as organic photoconductive materials have extensive applications in the field of light emitting diodes, p-n junction diodes, electrochromes and solar cells due to advantages of availability, high photochemical and thermal stability as well as excellent sensitivity in visible region. However, perylene diimides have two shortcomings in their applications. Firstly, ordinary perylene diimides are generally insoluble in common solvents, so uniform perylene diimide films can not be obtained by simple solution coating. Secondly, the electron mobility of perylene diimide is unsatisfactory, about at order of 10-5 cm2/V·s. Aiming for photoinduced charge transfer, we designed and synthesized a novel perylene diimide(V-PDI-V) with strong electron-withdrawing substitutents, i.e. viologenes. Single-layered photovoltaic device was fabricated by solution coating.
