Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of fascinating C1 sources because it is cheap, abundant, and renewable. Moreover, CO2 is relatively nontoxic compared to carbon monoxide or formaldehyde. Therefore, various kinds of CO2 utilization methods have been developed not only because of these prominent features but also worldwide concerns of global warming. One of the promising CO2 utilization methods is coupling reaction between epoxide and CO2 to produce poly- or cyclic carbonate. Among several organometallic catalysts reported to date, the tripodal ligand based catalysts showed remarkable activity in the cyclic carbonate synthesis. According to the DFT computation, authors proposed a transition state where two oxygen atoms each from epoxide and CO2 bind to the metal center in a cis fashion, thereby greatly lowering the activation barrier. Thus, highly active and selective catalysts for the coupling reaction of epoxide and CO2 can be developed. In this context, we have designed a new class of N1O3 ligand which can combine epoxide and CO2 into cyclic carbonate and polycarbonate respectively. In this presentation, we will introduce highly efficient and selective Fe(lll)-N1O3 complexes for the selective synthesis of cyclic carbonate. We will also demonstrate that Al(lll)-N1O3 complexes can be used for selective synthesis of polycarbonates and chemoselective conversion of epoxy amines into amino carbonates or hydroxyl oxazolidinones.
