Mo-based oxides and sulfides are of much interest on owing to their intrinsic mechanical and catalytic properties. For instance, MoO3 has been employed as a major component of hydrogen sensing, selective oxidation catalysis, and electrochromic coloration. MoS2 is known to be one of the most effective catalysts for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reaction. It is anticipated that the colloidal forms of the molybdenum oxides and sulfides would exhibit better performances due to their large surface area and high activity, but there were no reports thus far for the general synthetic schemes. Herein, we have synthesized polycrystalline Mo/MoOx nanoflakes with different sizes by thermal decomposition of molybdenum carbonyl under N2 atmosphere and utilized the Mo/MoOx flakes to synthesize tiny MoO3 and MoSx nanoparticles. The resulting particles are expected to be useful as oxidation and desulfurization catalysts for various organic reactions.
