Polarizing film, which controls the transmittance of light associated with liquid crystal, is very important optical component for liquid crystal display. Polarizing film is obtained by the orientation of PVA polymer film containing dye molecules in boric acid solution. Orientation of PVA film makes the dye molecules oriented in agreement with the host polymer film, and consequently, anisotropic absorption of light in the visible wavelength range is generated. During this process, boric acid presumably helps polymer segment-dye complex to be aligned with the stretching direction of the film. In this study, PVA-dye polarizing films were manufactured with or without boric acid. The effect of boric acid on the orientation of polymer segment-dye complex was examined on the basis of the optical properties of the polarizing films.
