Enzymes exhibit spectacular performance unequally by any human-made counterparts, and find wide applications in many areas, mainly due to their high catalytic efficiency and specificity. Highly proficient and robust apparatuses of enzymes are considered to play a crucial role in recent development in Industrial Biotechnology. Nonetheless, some drawbacks in enzyme property like low stability, too broad or narrow substrate specificity, and high production cost are still limiting the use of enzymes. Thus, designing enzymes with desirable functions targeted at practical applications has long been a goal in the relevant areas. And there have been many technological advances in improving the property of enzyme. However, a lack of understanding of structure-function relationships continues to hinder a design of biocatalyst with desirable properties. In this talk, I will introduce our recent progress toward “Designer enzymes“ based on structure-based rational design, computational method, and a combinatorial approach to achieve a goal in enzyme catalysis.
