Recently, significant progress has been made about the biosynthesis of deoxysugars because the biosynthetic gene clusters of several deoxysugar have been cloned and studied from various antibiotic producing microorganisms. I introduce the biosynthetic pathways of several deoxysugars, the generation of the novel hybrid macrolide antibiotics by coexpression of deoxysugar biosynthetic gene cassettes and flexible glycosyltransferase (GT) in a host organism and the production of nucleotide-sugar derivatives by the one-pot enzymatic reactions with the identified enzymes. These results about the biosynthesis of deoxysugars may allow the assembly of a repertoire of novel sugar structure through manipulation of genes from a variety biosynthetic pathways to create novel secondary metabolites for biological compounds.
