In this study we investigate tumor targeting T1 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. The ultrasmall Gadolinium Oxide nanoparticles (GNPs) coated with cRGD. A simple one-pot synthesis of all five cRGD peptide-conjugated ultrasmall GNPs to provide water solubility and to enhance biocompatibility. Peptides play a crucial role in fundamental physiological and biochemical functions of life, It is smaller than most nanoparticles and thus allow for multiple nanoparticle modification and creation of pluripotent nanoparticles. Targeting of nanoparticles in vitro, in cells and in vivo requires nanoparticle surface functionalization. Paramagnetic properties of the cRGD-GNPs and their ability as contrast agents are demonstrated. The sample was characterized by HRTEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR spectroscopy and 1.5 tesla MRI Scanner techniques. These cRGD-GNP samples exhibited longitudinal water proton relaxivities (r1= 10.0 - 18.7 s-1 mM-1 and r2/r1 = 1.4 - 1.7) higher than those of commercial Gd-chelates.
