In this study, a random poly(styrene-co-pentenoic acid) (PSPA) copolymer with 0.7 mol% acid functionality was prepared; the acid groups were completely neutralized with NaOH and Ba(OH)2. The mechanical properties of this ionomer were measured and compared with those of 1.2 mol% poly(styrene-co-acrylate) (PSAA) ionomer. The results showed that the storage modulus of PSPA ionomer was hardly increased, whereas that of PSAA ionomer increased by about 2 times. On the other hand, the Tg of the PSPA ionomer was almost the same as the Tg of the copolymer, but the Tg of the PSAA Na-ionomer was increased by about 3 ℃, and the Tg of the Ba-ionomer was increased by about 2 ℃. This result was probably due to the different distances between the ionic groups and the polymer main chain, which, in turn, affected the multiplet formation and mechanical properties of these two ionomers.
