Traditional chemical markets are served increasingly with products derived from bioprocesses or hybrid chemical/biocatalytic processes. The chemical industry is exploring the use of renewable feed stocks and bioprocesses to improve sustainability. In a recent study, the number of biotransformation processes that are carried out on an industrial scale is almost doubling every decade. At present there are about 150 processes of a scale of > 100 kg per year that use enzymes and/or whole cells starting from a precursor other than a carbon source. Attractive features of biological systems include substrate selectivity, regioselectivity, chemoselectivity, enantioselectivity and catalysis at ambient temperatures and pressures. Various applications and potentials of biocatalysis, mainly using enzymes, for a sustainable chemical industry are presented.
